Fire-resistant cables can withstand fire and continue operations when a fire has broken out. It keeps everyone safe for a while for the present parties to safely evacuate, and one can maintain safe operations under such circumstances without their surroundings catching fire.
For fire-resistant cables, testing is done in accordance with international standard IEC 60331, British Standards BS 6387 to ensure circuit integrity in the event of a fire.
A flame-retardant cable can extinguish the residual flame or be present near any fire breakouts without the cable catching fire under given conditions. Therefore, it contains the spread of the fire, ensuring that the danger is low for all parties involved.
Flame retardant tests are performed according to IEC 60332 international standards.
An FR cable, also known as a fire-resistant cable, can ensure continued operation despite the fire. In contrast, an FRLS cable, which stands for Flame Retardant Low Smoke cable, cannot do so as it cannot maintain circuit integrity. While fire-resistant cables can be used in power supply circuits for industrial buildings or emergency elevators, a flame-retardant cable may burn out and cease operation during a fire.
A heat-resistant cable can withstand high temperatures without melting. It differs from a flame retardant and fire-resistant cable as it cannot continue operations when exposed to flames, nor can it self-extinguish if it comes into contact with fire. They are commonly used in items such as a car’s engine compartment, saunas, and ovens.
A silicone rubber sheath is recommended. Silicone-insulated cables are used when exposure to high temperatures and temperature variations may cause conventional PVC-insulated cables to become brittle.
All these abbreviations mean Low Smoke Halogen Free. LSZH cables produce very little smoke and toxic fumes and no acid gases during combustion, which greatly increases the chances of escaping.
Halogen-free according to IEC 60754 and low smoke density in accordance with IEC 61034-2 are the international standards.
